Midstream infrastructure & storage

Large scale investments in assets and infrastructure to transport, store and convert new energy flows (hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, CO2, biogas, fuels, olefins, power, heat) are critical to decarbonize hard to abate industries. We support asset and infrastructure owners, developers and investors making robust investment decisions in dynamic global markets.

  • Bulk storage providers (liquid and dry bulk): We help storage and infrastructure providers developing new energy strategies and identifying opportunities to transform their sites and find new sites in established and emerging clean molecule supply and demand centers and import and export hubs globally. Existing sites are typically highly exposed to declining fossil flows (crude oil, naphtha, gasoline, diesel, coal, etc.) yet usually excellently located to play an instrumental role in the energy and feedstock, serving their surrounding industrial partners and hinterland. In addition, we help in designing new business and partnering models for expansion into clean molecule production and/or co-siting with producers/developers.
  • CO2 transport and storage: We help CO2 infrastructure (pipelines, compressors, storage, shipping) companies and consortia assess the feasibility of new projects, combining our technical knowledge with a deep understanding of the emitters’ landscape and their needs.
  • Hydrogen storage: We help clients assess the value of hydrogen storage for a variety of different use cases (such as cavern storage, above-ground compressed storage, and line packing) and markets, and support from initial storage modelling and sizing to project realization. We have distinct technical and commercial expertise in hydrogen cavern storage integration in clean molecule value chains (e.g., green ammonia production).

Power (and heat) generation

We support power plant operators transition their assets and portfolios from gray to green and remain competitive in a changing generation mix across short, mid, and long-term time horizons. The scale-up of renewable energy sources (wind and solar), phase-out of coal, and the introduction of biomass and ammonia (fired in thermal power plants) and hydrogen (in hydrogen ready CC/OCGT facilities) as low-carbon fuels to produce power presents significant challenges and opportunities. We help decarbonize fossil generation assets with biomass conversion and switching to non-carbon fuels. We help balance tradeoffs between the capture and storage of CO2 against the utilization of captured carbon and BECCS solutions in downstream green molecule production. The full energy transition potential is captured in comprehensive site conversion masterplans that look beyond existing asset decarbonization and site integration and involve low-carbon and green molecule production, import/export, and conversion (e.g., blue hydrogen, green methanol, etc.). In addition, we support the development of bio- and agro-based renewable natural gas portfolios and heat-networks to work towards a net-zero power mix.

We work with onshore and offshore renewable energy developers to integrate large scale electrons into the energy systems and optimize value across a range of applications including power-to-x solutions. System integration requirements are increasingly important in tenders for renewables production (e.g., offshore wind). We help understand value creation from hydrogen and downstream derivatives vs. direct use of power incl. power storage, electrification of industrial heat, and corporate PPAs. We support players along the value chain in scaling and integrating sustainable aviation fuels production in existing fuel supply chains. We help airlines and fuel suppliers that need to transition from fossil kerosene to bio/e-SAF understand various technology and feedstock pathways, their relative cost and time horizons when these fuels will become available and at what scale. We help identify and screen supply projects and understand key uncertainties and sensitivities to support sound investment decision in long-term offtake and equity investment deals. Our technology expertise covers all mature and emerging production pathways for the various types of SAF with different carbon intensity and qualification (RFNBO, Advanced Bio-Fuel, etc.). We leverage our insights on bio/e-SAF production projects as well as on potential precursors and feedstocks (waste oil, biomass, biogenic CO2, green hydrogen, bio/e-Methanol, and 2nd generation ethanol).
